Poorly-maintained roads are costing South Africa millions of rands.
The South African Road Federation says lack of proper road maintenance will eventually hit the taxpayer. The country's road network is estimated to stretch over 750,000 kilometres. But the network is falling into disrepair.Part of the problem is the budget allocated to road maintenance, which is proving inadequate.
A total of R3.5-billion has been allocated to Sanral in the 2019/20 financial year to improve non-toll roads over the next three years, and theThe South African Road Federation says this is not enough and that an additional R23.3-billion is needed per annum.
