SA Rugby has expressed condolences to the family of former Springbok head coach John Williams , who passed away on Thursday morning.Mark Alexander, President of SA Rugby, has paid tribute to Dr Johannes Gerhardus “John” Williams after the former Springbok lock and coach passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 78, following a battle with leukaemia.
Williams, who was born in Johannesburg on 29 October 1946, returned to the Bulls after his Springbok coaching stint had ended when he was replaced by Ian McIntosh in 1993. “He was a tough-as-nails lock and a great lineout jumper, and because of his knowledge of the game, he had a successful career in coaching, although the return to the Test arena in 1992 was a difficult time for the Boks.
“As a true rugby man, John ploughed back into the game after he had hung up his boots and he remained a loyal supporter of both the Bulls and the Springbok team. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and loved ones in this very sad time of bereavement.”
