Decorated South African Paralympian Ernst van Dyk hopes that the Cape Town Marathon can put wheelchair racing on the map. | Sport24news

Paralympic star Ernst van Dyk hopes for a podium finish ahead of Sunday's Sanlam Cape Town Marathon. The 10-time Boston Marathon winner hopes that Cape Town Marathon inspires future Paralympic South African stars.

The Cape Town Marathon hopes to become the seventh World Marathon Majors and join the Boston, London, New York, Tokyo, Chicago and Berlin marathons. Van Dyk is one of South Africa's most decorated para-cyclists, having won eight Paralympic medals and five Para-World Championships medals, and he has represented South Africa in five Paralympic Games.

"I want to see a carry over from my experience and what I've done in the world scene to some youngsters coming through. "A lot of races take off early, like Chicago. It's part of managing the city, managing the activity. In the early morning, there's not a lot happening yet," said Van Dyk."And then the city can go back to life and back to normal again. Unfortunately, having an earlier race like that, you struggle to get the big crowds, especially for the elites along the route.

Van Dyk, who has been out for most of the season after contracting Covid-19 in March, admits it'll be tough but hopes for a podium finish.
