SA Jewish Report laughs off expulsion from Press Council

The BDS and Giwusa lodged a complaint about the article. Acting ombud Johan Retief ruled that the SAJR should publish an apology. The SAJR lodged an application for leave to appeal, which was dismissed by Judge Bernard Ngoepe.On October 22 2020, the SAJR published the article under the headline: “Antisemitic Clover cartoon is the BDS’s sour last gasp”.
The SAJR, she said, had failed to comply with the ruling from the acting ombud and the chair of appeals to apologise for the article and retract the drawing it had published. Asked whether his publication was apologetic and would do things differently, given the opportunity, Sackstein said: “We have no regrets about what we published. We called out a racist for racism and the PCSA – without even having a hearing on the matter – decided to make a ruling. It was unprocedural, incompetent and offensive.”PCSA PROCESSES ARE ‘INDEPENDENT’
She said the SAJR had also queried the standing of Hassen Lorgat, who had lodged the complaint on behalf of the BDS.
