A review by the Council of Higher Education on the state of doctoral degrees finds that South African institutions are on par with international universities, but says there is room for improvement. | TebogoMonama

The Doctoral Degrees National Report is based on a review conducted between 2020 and 2021 at 28 higher education institutions offering doctoral qualifications.

The panel said for doctorate candidates to be successful, they needed to be well prepared for their studies. "The level of preparedness of persons admitted to doctoral studies significantly affects their ability to cope with the studies and complete on time. It is time for the system to consider a national review of the master's qualification, which, according to almost all institutions, are required as the pre-entry qualification requirement.

As a result of funding shortages, some universities have research grants for students, but there are not enough to cover all students. The lack of funds has also been attributed to students dropping out or taking longer to finish their studies. "The large number of students who drop out before completion is of great concern. Data gathered from one of our larger institutions indicate that for a particular cohort of doctoral students who first registered in 2014, 19% dropped out within five years.

"Thus, there is a greater convergence about the significance of communication skills, relevant information, and digital literacy skills attributes for doctoral students."
