South Africa on Tuesday called on members of the United Nations Security Council to work in concert to comprehensively deal with violence against women, which is one of the most pervasive human rights violations during times of conflict. Delivering the country’s statement during the open debate on Women, Peace and Security: Sexual Violence in Conflict, the deputy director-general for global governance of the department of international relations and cooperation, Ambassador Mxolisi Nkosi, challenged the UNSC to prioritise “gender-sensitive responses and programmes” aimed at addressing the needs of women and girls who are victims of sexual violence.
