James Beard Awards: San Antonio has 8 semifinalists for the 2022 James Beard Foundation’s Restaurant and Chef Awards
Mixtli chefs and co-owners Diego Galicia and Rico Torres were both semifinalists in the Best Chef: Southwest category in 2018. Esaul Ramos was a semifinalist in the Best Chef: Texas category in 2020.This year marks the return of the James Beard Awards, which is often likened to the Oscars of the food world, after a two-year hiatus. The foundation published a list of nominees in 2020, but decided to skip handing out awards both that year and in 2021.
While the James Beard Foundation cited the pandemic as its reason for canceling the 2020 and 2021 awards, the New York Times reported that other factors went into the decision, including a complete absence of Black winners and the surfacing of allegations of professional and personal misconduct leveled at some of the nominees, among other reasons.
San Antonio has come close to winning a James Beard Award several times in the past, but has yet to claim the big prize. Previous chef finalists have included Bruce Auden of Biga on the Banks and Andrew Weissman of Le Rêve and Il Sogno Osteria fame. Other San Antonio finalists have included cookbook writers Melissa Guerra and Terry Thompson-Anderson.
