A year ago today, Rickie Fowler ranked No. 134 on DataGolf. Today? He’s 25th. You might have missed it but Fowler has been one of the 10-15 most steady players on tour this year.
Projecting the United States Ryder Cup team is a little bit easier than Brendan Quinn’s job of narrowing down Team Europe. The best players are abundantly clear, and they aren’t going anywhere for a long time. Even the young, less proven guys are more obvious than with Europe. But it’s going to be a real battle for the final few spots. To refresh, the U.S. has six automatic qualifiers determined by the top six in a points system based on tournament earnings with majors carrying greater weight.
After that? Spots two through 11 are separated by just 2,211 points with plenty of golf to be played between now and the cutoff date of Aug. 20. One of them, Will Zalatoris, is out for the year after back surgery. So making projections based purely on the current top six qualifiers seems a little misguided.
Johnson said no decisions have been made on whether LIV golfers will be considered for the six captain’s picks, saying they are still eligible as PGA of America members. They’re technically able to qualify for the six automatic spots on points, but it would require their winning or consistently doing well in majors. For reference, Brooks Koepka is now No. 17 after his finish tied for second at Augusta, and Phil Mickelson is No. 22.
But to be fair, we also can feel pretty darn confident about the first nine or 10 players making the team. So for the U.S. projections, we’ll start with the guys who are nearly guaranteed to make it regardless of points and work our way down. He’s the current juggernaut of American golf. It’s fascinating to watch Scheffler take the clear top spot for the U.S. considering he was the rising star just two years ago.
