An uncertain start led to anxiety: what conceivably could be the point of this? Would anyone notice if we snuck off after half an hour? Yet the beguilingly slow-creep power was, after a couple of hours, utterly mesmeric. It gradually became apparent that the men had some scope for changing Marty’s opening statements, which meant that Wilson had to constantly ready her reaction and respond subtly to the shifting energy in each new iteration.
One young man startled her by saying, “I just turned 18. That old lady in Tesco’s this morning thought you were my mum.” What was unfolding before us was nothing less than the entire spectrum of power dynamics within a relationship: need, desire, submission, violence, to name but a few.
The scene replayed, peculiarly off-centre on the wide Young Vic stage, inside a gauze cube, with onstage camera-operators filming to allow us close-ups of Wilson’s face. I stayed for the first three hours and returned just before midnight for the night shift. Yet by then word had spread about this nascent cultural phenomenon and the queue was so many hours long that the Young Vic had to disperse punters.
