Rutgers kept up with Wake Forest for three quarters before falling apart late in the Gator Bowl defeat.

Wake Forest defeats Rutgers in 2021 Gator BowlGreg Schiano vowed to play a lot of players against Wake Forest in the Gator Bowl. He said his offense would be creative, his makeshift defense would be aggressive, and Adam Korsak would be his usual All-America self in the kicking game.coach was prophetic. The Scarlet Knights delivered an inspired performance for three quarters in the Gator Bowl before falling 38-10 on Friday before an announced crowd of 28,508 at TIAA Bank Field.

It meant Rutgers would go with a hodgepodge of players who saw limited action during the 5-7 campaign this fall. On one Wake Forest series in the second quarter that resulted in a field goal, a trio of true freshmen — defensive back Shaquan Loyal, defensive end Cam’Ron Stewart and defensive back Max Patterson — were on the field along with two other rarely used underclassmen — defensive end Wesley Bailey and defensive back Joe Lusardi — among the 11 defenders.

Three different Rutgers players attempted passes in the first half, including wide receiver Isaiah Washington, who hauled in a lateral from Vedral and then threw across the field to Langan, who gained 27 yards on the trick play. Wake Forest got a gift on the ensuing series when Kessawn Abraham, the Scarlet Knights’ defensive MVP during the regular season, dropped a would-be interception at the goal-line. Four plays later, quarterback Sam Hartman connected with wide receiver A.T. Perry for a 29-yard touchdown pass.

Wake Forest added another field goal early in the third quarter and Rutgers missed an opportunity to cut its deficit in half.
