Squatter gangs from Russia and other countries are targeting the empty Spanish holiday homes owned by Ukrainians who are stranded at home because of the war, theipaper has learned

Desokupa2 negotiates with the squatters to get them to leave. Sometimes they can be persuaded to leave in one day but in other cases, it can take up to a month. Javi said his company never uses force to oust the squatters.About 30 per cent of the cases which Desokupa2 deals with involve organised gangs, Javi said, while the rest are people who say they can no longer pay the mortgage.

Banks and investment funds have also paid the Colombian gang to get back flats instead of fighting through the courts, a spokesman for the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan regional police said. It made about €24,000 per month from “selling” or “renting” the properties or charging the financial institutions to return the properties, police said.
