The Russian president's aide Vladimir Medinsky warned that the 'very existence' of Russia was at stake.

Medinsky said at a meeting of an interdepartmental commission on historical education, that Russia now faces a great challenge with the West, according to a report by Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

During the meeting on Thursday, he compared the significance of Russia's"special military operation" in Ukraine and the response from its allies to that of the fall of the Soviet Union.
