More than 10 years ago, Taseko Mines proposed an open-pit mining project in an area of immeasurable cultural and spiritual importance for our Tŝilhqot’in people. This area, about 125 kilometres southwest of Williams Lake, is known to our people as Teẑtan Biny , Yanah Biny and the surrounding area .
Taseko’s mine proposal was rejected twice by the federal government under Prime Minister Stephen Harper, first in 2010 and again in 2014. As a result of the federal government’s rejection, New Prosperity Mine cannot be built as matters stand. And yet, in the summer of 2017, while the wildfires closed in on my community, B.C. granted a permit to Taseko to conduct an extensive drilling, road-building and excavation program to advance this very same project.
In 1864-65, our war chiefs were wrongly convicted and executed for standing up for their culture and rights in the face of a road project through our territory to service the gold rush. Last year, the prime minister issued a statement exonerating our chiefs and rightfully recognizing them as heroes of our people.
A lasting resolution of the conflict over the future of Teẑtan Biny and Nabas is needed. To transition from conflict, our communities have offered an alternative vision for this area as the heart of the Dasiqox Tribal Park — a proactive step toward a more sustainable future for the region, one where Tŝilhqot’in values and laws truly shape decisions on lands and waters that are sacred to us.
