Symone’s drag is an ode to Blackness, telling stories of both beauty and tragedy within the Black community. Here's how the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race got to where she is today:

I remember getting the call hearing the words “congratulations you’ve been invited to compete on Season 13 of” and then just screaming at the top of my lungs in my apartment. After the show ended, I gained a greater sense of confidence. I was quite a shy kid so going through [] allowed certain people to see a little bit of themselves in me and that helped. Over the years I taught myself that [insecurities] are a story I tell myself; they aren’t true.

A lot of us, as Black and brown people, are so conditioned to be scared of missing out on any opportunity. It’s like, “Oh my God, they’re giving it to us and it might be taken away.” I think that if you lean into that mentality, then perhaps something can happen. But when you’re able to see the long game—because it is a long game—you learn what’s right for you. It can be a beautiful thing.

My biggest “mistake” happened exactly when I realized I had forgotten who I was. That’s the best way to put it. In an effort to try to pull someone else up, I kind of let myself go down a little bit. My biggest lesson in that moment was to protect me. I kind of let my own kindness get taken for weakness as they say. I had to learn to not necessarily be less kind, but to be more. I say that in the most humble way possible. But I have to remember what that means and what comes with that.

My hope is for people to see that anything is possible if you want it bad enough. You can have anything you want, you just have to work for it and you can. You don’t have to let any of the negativity of the world or things around you dictate how your life is going to be. You can build through it and dictate what’s for you. That’s the mark that I want to leave behind.
