US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will boycott the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in South Africa, accusing the host government of promoting an 'anti-American' agenda.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Wednesday that he would be skipping the Group of 20 foreign ministers' talks in Johannesburg, South Africa , this month. Rubio cited what he described as the host government's 'anti-American' agenda, alleging that South Africa was engaged in expropriating private property and using the G20 platform to promote 'solidarity, equality, and sustainability.
' In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Rubio mirrored the tone often used by former President Donald Trump, stating, 'South Africa is doing very bad things. Expropriating private property. Using G20 to promote 'solidarity, equality, & sustainability.' My job is to advance America's national interests, not waste taxpayer money or coddle anti-Americanism.' This announcement comes after Trump himself criticized South Africa's land reforms aimed at addressing historical inequalities stemming from the apartheid era. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has refuted Trump's claims that his government was 'confiscating' land, asserting that he is prepared to explain the land reform policy to Trump. Ramaphosa has also engaged in discussions with Elon Musk, a close ally of Trump, to express concerns about the spread of 'disinformation' regarding South Africa by the former president. The absence of the United States, a leading global power, from the G20 talks would represent a significant setback for the forum, which aims to represent the world's major economies. The meeting presented a potential opportunity for Rubio to meet with his Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as Trump has been advocating for diplomatic engagement on the Ukraine war
