Chris Knight: It’s also great visual fun to behold, and quite funny to boot
Here’s an animated movie that’s definitely not for kids, unless they’re well versed in Botticelli, Velázquez and Warhol, not to mention Hitchcock, Stallone and Tarantino.
But even if you don’t catch every reference to Picasso or Rambo, you can still thrill to the artistry and storytelling in this first film from Hungarian animator Milorad Krstic. The main character is Ruben Brandt , a psychologist with his own psychological problem; he keeps imagining that paintings are trying to kill him. Warhol’s Elvis has a go at him, as does Botticelli’s Venus and the late-night denizens of Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks. Van Gogh’s postman tries to throw him out of a plane. So he enlists an international group of art thieves to steal the paintings that are tormenting him, earning him the criminal nickname “The Collector.
The heists also put him on a collision course with Detective Mike Kowalski , hired to stop the mysterious Collector. Hunter and prey don’t know it, but they share an acquaintance in Mimi , a stuntwoman with sticky fingers; Mike meets her during a high-speed chase after she lifts a famous fan from a museum.
With subplots involving unknown parents, Cold War spies, art therapy and performance art, . But it’s also great visual fun to behold, and quite funny to boot. When Mimi first contacts Ruben, she tells him she read in a magazine that he was “the best shrink to treat artistic souls.” He replies modestly: “I don’t know about the best.” She accepts that, noting: “It wasn’t a very good magazine.”
