The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) is intensifying efforts to reduce road crashes and fatalities during the post-holiday period.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation ( RTMC ) is stepping up efforts to reduce road accidents and fatalities as holidaymakers prepare to return to cities and workplaces in the coming days. The RTMC will deploy traditional leaders and engage with public transport operators as part of its interventions.

The analysis of fatal crash statistics since the beginning of the festive season shows that the Amathole district in the Eastern Cape is among the top ten districts nationally experiencing a high number of crashes and fatalities. The district stretches from Idutywa to Fort Beaufort and includes towns such as Butterworth and Stutterheim. The RTMC says statistics show that fatal crashes in this district involved public transport vehicles that had driven long distances between the Western Cape or Gauteng without sufficient rest. Law enforcement and the South African Taxi Council have observed that some drivers did not depart from designated areas in the district during peak periods and traveled inter-provincially to pick up passengers, becoming fatigued when the crashes occurred. Other districts under focus due to a high number of fatal crashes include eThekwini Municipality, City of Johannesburg, City of Cape Town, City of Tshwane, Capricorn, Ekurhuleni, Cape Winelands, Vhembe and Fezile Dabi. The RTMC expects traffic to peak from January 1 to 6 and law enforcement will intensify its focus on public transport and visibility. A dedicated team has been put in place to monitor the implementation of road interventions and progress. Motorists are reminded to plan their routes appropriately and avoid traveling at night
