Aidan O’Brien’s six-year-old can win the Group One feature on the third day of Royal Ascot 2024 for a second time in three years. The son of Galileo was a superb winner of the 2m4f feature of Royal Ascot two years ago and looked to be the premier stayer on the Flat when he followed that success up with further Group One wins in the Goodwood Cup at Glorious Goodwood , the Irish St Leger at the Curragh and the Prix Du Cadran at ParisLongchamp to complete an unbeaten six-race campaign in 2022.
Clearly stepping back into Group One company and the Gold Cup will be a tougher race for Kyprios with the likes of Vauban – from the all-conquering fellow Irish stable of National Hunt handler Willie Mullins – and last year’s Queen’s Vase hero Gregory among the rivals who could give O’Brien’s staying star plenty to think about.
O’Brien’s WHISTLEJACKET can land the opener on day three, the Group Two Norfolk Stakes . The No Nay Never juvenile was beaten by Cowardofthecounty on his racecrouse debut having led for a long way in the six-furlong maiden at the Curragh in April. He left that form behind when showing the benefit of that experience to comfortably land a Listed contest dropped back to the minimum distance at the Curragh.
Richard Hannon’s PERSICA can follow up his handicap win at Epsom with another in the King George V Stakes . Like King's Gambit, Persica ran in the London Gold Cup and finished a decent fourth to the Charlton-trained winner. The three-year-old New Bay colt built on that with an excellent win the 1m2f Hong Kong Jockey Club Lester Piggott Handicap on Betfred Derby day at Epsom, beating Portsmouth by two-and-a-quarter lengths.
