Several other teams, however, believe it might make more sense to go in the opposite direction, and are internally debating whether a four-man rotation is potentially a better response to the way the game is evolving. As pitchers throw harder and harder, clubs are exploring new ways to manage their workloads. The numbers already suggest that most starters are not capable of succeeding a third time through the order.
The effect on health would be a major question. But if starters threw more frequently they probably would not throw as hard, perhaps improving their chances of avoiding injury. A roster spot would open for a reliever, preferably a multi-inning type, enabling teams to construct their 13-man staffs more efficiently., in creating the 13-pitcher limit, wanted in part to revive the identity of starting pitchers, force managers to stick with them longer.
Clemente’s name is prominent at three different points in the fall – when the nominees for his award are announced, when the league stages a day in his honor and again at the World Series when the winner of the award is named.
