Justin Rose leads the 89th Masters by three strokes after the second round. The Englishman's consistency is a challenge for contenders like McIlroy, Aberg, and DeChambeau.
Justin Rose maintained his three-stroke lead after completing the front nine of the second round of the 89th Masters on Friday. He was closely followed by a formidable group consisting of Rory McIlroy, Ludvig Aberg , and reigning US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau. Rose had set the pace on Thursday with a remarkable seven-under par 65, his best ever round at Augusta National , giving him a commanding lead over defending champion Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners, and Aberg.
Rose's consistent performance continued on Friday as he added morning birdies at the par-five second and eighth holes, offsetting a bogey at the par-three sixth. He stood at eight-under par through nine holes. Aberg, the runner-up at last year's Masters in his major debut, also demonstrated strong form, sinking a six-foot birdie putt at the third hole to share second place on five-under par.DeChambeau, the reigning US Open champion who began the day tied for fifth with Tyrrell Hatton at 69, joined the chase with birdies at the second and fourth holes. At the second, he sank a seven-foot birdie putt, while at the fourth, he pulled off an impressive feat by holing out from a bunker from 36 feet. Despite overnight rain softening the Augusta National course, sunny and calm conditions prevailed when Rose teed off in the seventh group on Friday. Rose, a veteran with wins at the 2013 US Open and the 2016 Rio Olympics, began his day with a tap-in par after a 35-foot pitch, following his impressive first three birdies on Thursday. He extended his lead with another birdie at the second hole, navigating a greenside bunker and sinking a 14-foot putt. While he faced challenges at the fourth, fifth, and sixth holes, he remained steadfast in his pursuit of victory. Meanwhile, McIlroy, seeking a career Grand Slam with a win, fought to recover from a disappointing opening round of 72. He showed signs of resurgence with a birdie at the second hole, making an impactful comeback in the early stages
