The 2014 Open champion shot an opening round of 78 and is in danger of missing the cut after a disastrous start to the final major of the year
Rory McIlroy has had a disastrous start to The Open, returning to the clubhouse on the first day with a score of 78 - seven over-par.
The 8th hole turned into a nightmare for McIlroy as he double bogeyed, going long off the tee and short from the bunker. His front nine was uninspired, with most putts for birdie not even touching the cup. It’s his highest score since the opening 79 at Royal Portrush in the 2019 Open while he also shot an opening round of 79 at Muirfield in 2013.
"Difficult day. . . I felt like I did OK for the first part of the round and then missed the green at the Postage Stamp there and left it in and made a double. He added: "I guess when that happens, you play your practice rounds, you have a strategy that you think is going to help you get around the golf course, but then when you get a wind you haven't played in, it starts to present different options and you start to think about maybe hitting a few clubs that you haven't hit in practice. Just one of those days where I just didn't adapt well enough to the conditions.
