Roosevelt High Matric Dance Chaos: Gun Incident and Intoxication

Roosevelt High School matric dance in Johannesburg descended into chaos with a firearm incident, intoxicated pupils and abuse of teachers, prompting an investigation.

Roosevelt High School in Johannesburg, a government school with over 1,500 pupils, is dealing with a major fallout after its 2024 matric dance at the Avianto venue descended into chaos, involving a firearm incident, intoxicated pupils, and abuse of staff. The event, meant to be a glamorous celebration on a Saturday evening, turned into a nightmare, prompting principal Cristèl Venter to issue an open letter detailing the events.

Firearm Incident Mars Matric Dance

Arrivals for the dance were scheduled from 4pm to allow for photographs and seating. However, chaos erupted early when a firearm was produced during arrivals and aimed at an Avianto staff member. The incident was captured on film and witnessed by parents in the queue.

Principal Venter stated that security camera footage has been reviewed and the matter will be handled through lawful channels. She emphasized that firearms are strictly prohibited as dangerous objects under public school legislation, which applies to school activities even outside school premises.

Intoxication and Abuse at Avianto Venue

Inside the luxury estate, the situation deteriorated further. Several pupils arrived severely intoxicated, and bathrooms and other areas were covered in vomit, leaving the venue in an unacceptable condition. The smell of dagga was also reported.

Teachers, who chaperoned voluntarily and paid for their own tickets, faced verbal abuse from parents, pupils, and transporters. One female teacher was shoved by a parent, and another parent aggressively pointed a finger in a teacher's face. A parent also barged in to pull their child out for a grander entrance.

Avianto staff reported excessive car revving and reckless driving, with one vehicle stalling. Employees felt afraid while hosting the function. Police were called but did not arrive, so Avianto deployed private security to assist.

Principal Venter’s Response and Investigation

Principal Venter, who left her sick bed to shut down the event early, apologized numerous times to venue personnel, staff, and well-behaved learners. She has promised a thorough, formal investigation, stating that there will be no trial by social media, but rather evidence, procedure, fairness, and accountability.

She defended the school against critics, noting that they did not bring drug-testing equipment to the dance. She also addressed concerns about victimization, asserting that she would not accept insinuations that the school would victimize a learner for a parent raising concerns.

Staff members stayed behind to help pupils contact parents and arrange safe collections. Venter expressed disappointment that such behavior occurred, saying it will not become normal. The open letter has gone viral, with public support for the school's approach.
