Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams won two awards at the Caf Awards, becoming the second South African to win the Interclub Player of the Year Award and accomplishing the feat of saving four penalties in a single AFCON shootout.
Mamelodi Sundowns star Ronwen Williams made history at the Caf Awards held on 16 December in Marrakesh, Morocco. Williams won two awards, becoming the second Premier Soccer League player to win the Interclub Player of the Year Award after his Bafana Bafana teammate Percy Tau. He was also nominated for the Ballon d’Or’s Yachine Trophy, which recognizes the best goalkeepers in the world, but ranked ninth-best.
Williams had a standout year, leading Sundowns to the semifinals of the Caf Champions League and winning the Premier Soccer League. He also showed some moments of brilliance at the Africa Cup of Nations, becoming the first goalkeeper to save four penalties in a single TotalEnergies AFCON shootout.
