For a couple of days, Bob Dyce is taking care of CFL business, talking about logistics, strategies, rules and things like that.

“The other day, my son said he’s never seen me on the phone this much in an off-season,” said Dyce. “There’s always something to talk about. I’m certainly busier than I’ve been in the past, but I’m enjoying it. It’s gone pretty much how I would have expected. Shawn has done a fantastic job bringing back some of the players who were eligible for free agency and I know he’s going to continue doing that going forward.

With the league meetings out of the way this week, Dyce and his coaching staff will keep plugging away at their lengthy To-Do list. It’s important to lay the groundwork and check things like terminology off the list. Dyce is all about giving those around him the opportunity to put their own ideas in place. It’s an opportunity for him to learn. It’s still early and the offensive and defensive playbooks are taking shape.

In the days ahead, there will be some tough decisions for the organization to make. There are still several potential free agents, including defensive end Lorenzo Mauldin, the CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2022. Dyce knows he won’t be able to keep everybody he wants back in a Redblacks uniform. Heading into the Feb. 14 opening of CFL free agency, the Redblacks will prepare for different scenarios.
