“Madam Justice — is that how I refer to you?” he asked Justice Valerie Marshall at the start of proceedings, which he attended by phone.Slade was represented in the St. John’s courtroom by lawyer Robert Hoskins, whom he recently retained to represent him at trial on charges related to break-ins at a bar and supermarket in Conception Bay North three years ago.
Marshall scheduled the trial to begin Oct. 10, 2023 and made sure Slade had heard the new date on the phone.Slade was arrested, RCMP said in a news release at the time, after a police dog tracked the suspect of a break-in at Buckie’s Bar in Tilton, Spaniard’s Bay, Nov. 21, 2019, to a wooded area. Police had arrived at the bar around 1 a.m. to find a damaged vehicle as well as significant damage to the building.
