Roger Bilodeau, the man who initiated a high-speed chase that ended in two Métis-Cree hunters being shot to death on a rural road northeast of Edmonton, was sentenced to 10 years in prison Friday

But Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Eric Macklin gave Bilodeau credit for a little more than 1,600 days of time served in the Edmonton Remand Centre, counting additional time due to harsher conditions in custody during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the end, Bilodeau will serve roughly five-and-a-half years in prison.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.

Jake Sansom, 39, and his uncle Morris Cardinal, 57, were found dead with gunshot wounds Saturday morning on a rural road near Glendon. The day they were killed, Sansom, 39, and his uncle Cardinal, 57, had been moose hunting near Glendon. Some time after nightfall, they briefly pulled into the entrance of Roger Bilodeau’s driveway. At trial, Bilodeau and his son Joseph — just 16 at the time — said they worried the occupants of the truck were thieves.

The Métis Nation of Alberta has called the killings a “stark illustration of the discrimination and contempt experienced by many of our citizens, especially in that area of the province.”Article content Macklin said in his decision Friday that Roger Bilodeau jumped to an “unfounded conclusion” that Cardinal and Sansom were doing something “nefarious,” and the two hunters “must have developed a great fear” while they were being pursued.
