Team owner Tillman Fertitta comments as Ime Udoka is officially announced as the new head coach of the Houston Rockets during a press conference held at the Toyota Center Wednesday, Apr. 26, 2023 in Houston.During the Rockets’ introduction of new head coach Ime Udoka on Wednesday, team owner Tilman Fertitta accidentally let slip that the Rockets are building a new $70 million practice facility.
Fertitta could not yet provide a timeline for the completion of the facility, which he said is being built in the Galleria area and likely won’t be ready by the 2024-25 NBA season. “I really screwed up. We wanted to do a real formal announcement,” Fertitta said. “We were hoping it would be ready for next season, but just with permitting and everything — we'll lay it all out for you guys soon. And it's really exciting. It's gonna be great. It's in the Galleria area. I think it'll be a great tool to recruit players.”
Fertitta’s admission came as he was responding to a question about years-old reports, when he first bought the Rockets in 2017, that he was unwilling to spend as much as other NBA owners. “I don't know where I didn't spend it,” Fertitta said. “we're the only team that has their own private 767 to fly around in. We're building a $70 million dollar practice facility right now. We've been at the top in cap every single year. Daryl , in his three years, never asked to go into the luxury tax because there's other penalties with it.
