Cam Whitmore celebrates after being drafted 20th overall pick by the Houston Rockets during the first round of the 2023 NBA Draft at Barclays Center on June 22, 2023 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. While there was much speculation that they would orchestrate a trade, the Rockets elected to keep their second first-round pick in this year’s NBA draft and used it to select former Villanova forward Cam Whitmore as the 20th overall pick.

That Whitmore was still available so late for the Rockets came as somewhat of a surprise. He was once considered a potential top-10 pick, but reports surfaced that some teams were concerned about his health after pre-draft physical examinations, and perhaps led to his slide on draft night. Whitmore broke his leg and did not play his freshman year of high school. In college, he missed part of his one season at Villanova after undergoing surgery on his right thumb.

At 6-6 and 18 years old, Whitmore is considered one of the best shooters in this year’s draft class. At Villanova, he averaged 12.5 points per game on 47.5 percent shooting, 35 percent from 3-point range. The Rockets have now drafted nine players, including Whitmore, with first-round picks in the last three drafts.
