Dallas Mavericks' Luka Doncic goes up for a shot as Houston Rockets' Alperen Sengun defends during the first half of an NBA basketball game Monday, Jan. 2, 2023, in Houston. The Rockets were where they wanted to be, where they needed to be to escape the doldrums of losses that were piling up.
The Rockets did what they usually do late in close games. They got enough stops to win it. They have the top-rated defense in clutch situations in the NBA. But they are last offensively in games with a margin of five points or less in the final five minutes. “We are trying to find what to run and recognize zone vs. man and know who to go to and when, all those things,” Rockets coach Stephen Silas said. “I remember early when we were in Dallas it wasn’t so automatic. But they got to the point they are now. And that’s what’ll happen to us.”
