Yet, as much as stopping anything has been an issue all season, the problem on Monday seemed to be at least in part that the offense had done so well early. The Rockets and Knicks traded baskets and the lead long enough for the Rockets to think that could last. Things fell apart beginning when Randle beat the buzzer to close the third quarter with a 3-pointer, giving the Knicks a 12-point lead. Considering the way the Knicks had been scoring – they went into the fourth quarter making 60 percent of their shots including 11 of 27 of their 3s – the Rockets had kept the game reasonably close before that shot. The Knicks, however, followed that by outscoring the Rockets 15-2 in 3 ½ minutes to open the fourth quarter.
But the Rockets’ defense has been a shortcoming throughout the season, ranking as better than only the Spurs’ and by just a half-point allowed per 100 possessions. Since the All-Star break, an 18-game stretch in which the Rockets have made significant strides offensively, the defense has been the league’s worst, allowing 122.8 points per 100 possessions, five more than they had been giving up before the break.
