Several people met in front of Rochester City Hall Monday night to honor the life of a non-binary Oklahoma teen who died earlier this month.
A candlelight vigil was held Monday, Feb. 26, 2024 at The Lab: Creative Resource Center on State Street to remember Nex Benedict, a non-binary Oklahoma teen who was beaten to death by students at her high school.
"We wanted to give folks an opportunity to get together to grieve and to mourn," said Reverend Lane-Mairead Campbell, a minister at First Universalist Church who organized the gathering. "This is a time when our community is grieving. As trans people, we have experienced a pretty significant loss. The loss of one of our own, Nex Benedict.
For many young members of Rochester's LGBTQ+ community, Nex's death is a stark reminder of the challenges they face across the country.
