Rochester , N.Y. — A new project to improve roadway safety may impact the speed limits on city streets.
The City of Rochester announced a 10-point plan to increase traffic safety and enforcement, with hopes of reducing traffic fatalities and severe injuries.city that will work to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries among road users while increasing safe and equitable mobility for all," said Rochester Mayor Malik Evans.
Evans stood alongside family members of hit-and-run victims, like Rochester City Councilmember Bridget Monroe, to announce a new priority action plan."As my son stepped out from that school bus, he was hit, and she left the scene," Monroe recalled. "My son’s head cracked her windshield, left his blood and his hair, and she continued to go on while he was left laying in the middle of the street.
The Vision Zero plan aims to enhance roadway safety through several initiatives, including a 25 mile-per-hour speed limit on all city streets and the creation of a 63-mile connected bicycle network. "We are adopting a data-driven approach that will enable us to identify high-risk areas, implement targeted interventions and measure our progress over time," Evans said. "Too many of our residents have been affected by traffic crashes, especially our pedestrians."
