'It’s madness that they are not given an automatic berth' Italy legend Roberto Baggio says the Azzurri should have been guaranteed a place at the 2022 World Cup after winning the European Championship. Read more ➡️

The Italians failed to qualify for back-to-back World Cups after suffering a shock loss to North Macedonia in the play-offs a couple months ago.

Since winning the European Championship last year, Roberto Mancini's side have struggled to get a consistent run of results. Baggio feels its a shame that the reigning European champions will not be at the biggest competition in world football.“Italy won the European Championship, I think it’s shameful, it’s madness that they are not given an automatic berth to the World Cup for that," Baggio said, as per Goal.

“Anyone can lose one game against anyone else on a bad day, but these lads deserve some sort of reward for what they achieved, don’t they? If I had been in that squad, I would’ve struggled to accept it.” The Azzurri recently lost out on the Cup of Champions title in a 3-0 defeat to South American champions Argentina on Wednesday.
