Working closely with longtime colleague and Shubert chairman Philip J. Smith, Wankel shares leadership of the company that is Broadway’s biggest landlord, encompassing 17 of the Great White Way’s 41 theaters, the Off-Broadway theater complex New World Stages, the famed Stage 42, Philadelphia’s Forrest Theatre and Boston’s eponymous Shubert.
Over more than 40 years with Shubert, he has been a guiding force in the company’s financial, real-estate and ticketing operations, shepherding shows into its venues including “The Band’s Visit,” “Dear Evan Hansen” and “Hello, Dolly!” On the board of the Shubert Foundation, the nonprofit that hands out millions in grants to support the performing arts, he delivered the keynote at Variety’s Power of Broadway..
