, such as one by the London School of Economics, suggest that ethnic diversity is “positively related to the perceived social cohesion of neighbourhood residents, once the level of economic deprivation is accounted for”.
That’s the point where you can see the great moral chasm rise up from underneath you. This is, without caveat or complication, the language of the far-right. It implies that we are being invaded by people from different cultures, who are instinctively and innately criminal in nature. They will consequently corrupt us and compromise our national cohesion. It is a message as old as time.
There is a lesson here about the dynamics of immigration and asylum policy. You cannot placate this tendency. Even now, as ministers attempt, they feel compelled to go further, to deepen the coarseness of their language, to drill down even farther into the darkest recesses of the nativist mindset.
