In surveillance video shared by the Philadelphia Police Department, robbers occupied three to four vehicles and lined them up before getting to the exit booth of one of the rental agencies. The driver of the first car pulls a gun on the attendant and then demands the gate to be opened. The four vehicles are then seen driving through the open gate.
The thefts began in January,. Initially, two to six people would sneak onto the rental car lots protected by fences, gates or barriers and steal the cars through various methods. That included using the keys that were left inside the cars by some of the rental companies.
But when the rental companies enhanced their security, the group adopted new tactics. According to police, the thieves would get into 3 or 4 cars, line them up and drive them to the exit booth, where they pointed a gun at the parking lot attendant. They threatened to shoot the attendant unless he opened the gate. The suspects appear to be teens between 16 and 22 years old who often wore dark clothing, hooded sweatshirts and masks during the robberies, according to reports.
Anyone with information regarding the suspects or thefts are asked to contact the Philadelphia Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit at 215-685-9130.
