The island is also home to endangered marine life like the African penguin.
The museum said once the island is declared a marine protected area, the species will enjoy greater preservation.
“There will be no fishing of abalone, and West Coast rock lobsters around the island. African penguins are also endangered, and we hope those numbers will increase with more food availability. Other species like Cape cormorants, oyster catcher will also be protected,” said Robben Island Environmental Manager, Sabelo Madlala.The government hopes an increase in marine protected areas will help reach a global 2020 target to advance biodiversity protection.
