Rivian surprises the EV industry by unveiling a smaller, even more affordable R3 crossover and its high-performance sibling, the R3X.
After months of anticipation, Rivian has finally ripped the covers off its long-awaited R2 crossover. The Amazon-backed EV startup’s hotly anticipated follow-up to theto Thursday’s event in California, Rivian didn’t stop at the R2. CEO RJ Scaringe stunned the audience by unveiling the smaller, even more affordable R3 crossover – and its high-performance sibling, the R3X. If ever there was a way to set the internet ablaze, this was it.
The R2 will aim squarely at Tesla’s Model Y when it begins production in the first half of 2026, with a starting price of $45,000. Think of it as a baby R1S – a little smaller, more sculpted, but undeniably Rivian. Thankfully, the production version doesn’t stray far from those early leaks. Rivian’s development teams have worked hard to decrease costs through innovative manufacturing, design, and supply chain solutions.If you’re interested in reserving an R2, you can now do so for just $100 in the US. Deliveries are expected to start in the first half of 2026. The R3 and R3X will be launched after the R2 to ensure a smooth rollout and rapid production ramp-up. Rivian has learned from its experience launching multiple vehicles simultaneously and wants to avoid any issues.
The real surprise came with the R3 and R3X. These are even smaller and even more affordable offerings that could bring Rivian ownership within reach of the masses. We’ll have to wait for details on those but count on them sharing plenty of that Rivian design magic.InsideEV
