Slowly banning smoking is a personal mission of the Prime Minister

‘Sunak has always known that there will be a sizeable rebellion from his side against the legislation’ pursued equal marriage a decade ago even though a majority of his own party voted against it, not just because he thought it was the right thing to do but also because he felt it would send a signal about the modern Conservative Party that even many of the rebels would come to thank him for.

Indeed, this was how senior healthcare figures in the health service and medical establishment were persuaded to back the smoking crackdown in the first place: they were told by Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty that while smoking isn’t the thing most of them worry about the most, they needed to show willingness so that the Government might continue to develop preventive policies on much bigger problems for the NHS,...

Anyway, the chances of Sunak personally tackling the national issue of obesity aren’t very high, and not just because he’s likely only got a few months left in the job. The way all governments have historically responded to preventable illnesses does not inspire much hope. After all, it took decades for politicians to take any action at all on smoking with tobacco, even when the evidence of its harm was incontrovertible.
