The 0.2 per cent growth in Gross domestic product – a measure of the value of goods and services produced – was a positive sign following the larger than expected fall the previous month.Treasury sources welcomed the news – suggesting it has indicated the Government strategy is working. When Mr Sunak made the pledge to cut inflation it was already predicted to fall sharply – but the decline has been slower than expected.
The data also shows 8,998 people in England were waiting more than 18 months to start routine hospital treatment at the end of August, up from 7,289 at the end of July.
