is touring an apprentices’ classroom at Sizewell B Power station in Suffolk. The Prime Minister is learning how to use nuclear power safely. After turning a switch to open the cooling pump, Sunak asks a question of an instructor: “What’s an example of something that might go wrong?”, what can go wrong is still a live issue. Another question for Sunak also won’t go away: why is the campaign being fought right now?for the first time in three years, was welcomed by Sunak.
At Sizewell, Sunak bounds up to former Cabinet minister Thérèse Coffey, who is defending the seat of Suffolk Coastal with a majority of just 9,128. “Hello, Tizz,” Sunak greets her, pleased to see a friendly face. The Tories, one of the most successful parties at regeneration in Europe, are already looking away from Sunak towards their new leader. Cabinet ministers, some frantically defending previously unassailable majorities, are already duking it out for the future leadership. Pledges of support are being inputted into headache-inducing spreadsheets. If telephone land lines were still a thing, they would be being installed, as intelligence is gauged, weighed and filed away.
Meanwhile, the combative International Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch will have to see off competition from the right, including former immigration minister Robert Jenrick, alongside former home secretaries Priti Patel and Suella Braverman. The latter didn’t enjoy much support from the party during the last parliament.
