Backbenchers are also growing increasingly concerned at the inability of ministers to stop the small boats crossing the Channel carrying would-be refugees, many of whom have come from safe countries such as Albania. Allies of Mr Sunak say he is right to focus on controlling inflation and the public finances, and insist the small boats crisis is one of his top priorities.
