The long road back 🙌 Rickie Fowler knew he needed to change before he could make U.S. Open history. So he did. And it all paid off.
But the start and finish to this story are really about his walk to the next green. He placed an OK shot on the par-3 ninth and made his way up the hill toward the green. The ninth green sits directly adjacent to the tee box on No. 10, and next up on the tee was the young Korean sensation Tom Kim. And his caddie, a man named Joe Skovron, placed Kim’s bag on the ground, turned around and took a few steps up to watch Fowler go for history.Skovron had been Fowler’s caddie for 13 years.
So Fowler made changes. He switched caddies. He changed clubs. He returned to coach Butch Harmon after working with John Tillery. Something worked. In the fall, he finished top 10 at two of the first three events of the new season. He missed just one cut in his next 15 tournaments. Most of all, Fowler finished top 20 in eight of the nine elevated events he has played in this season.
“I would say we’re starting to get maybe as close as we’ve ever been to where I was through kind of that ’14, ’15 area,” Fowler said, “I’ve been playing fairly consistently, but a lot of it for me is what I’ve been able to get out of off weeks where I’m not playing very well and still able to make the cut and kind of turn those into at least top 20s or top 10s and the last few years those were missed cuts and going home.”Then Fowler arrived in Los Angeles this week as something else entirely.
