At least six farmers whose building permits were left in question by the new legislation will have the chance to proceed with their projects.
A handful of Richmond farm owners who had their building permits rejected last month due to new provincial regulations may now be allowed to proceed with construction.Johal applied last spring to build a 10,500-square-foot house on his parents’ eight-acre property in Richmond, so that he, his grandparents, his parents, sister and his uncle’s family could live together.
Four days later, Johal received a second email from the city, this time with a notice that his building permit application had been denied because his house was larger than allowed under an amended Agricultural Land Commission Amendment Act. This week, Johal received yet another email from the city, this time telling him that if he completes the requirements and makes arrangements to pick up his permit by March 20, he will be allowed to proceed. Johal said he is now rushing to meet the deadline.
In an email, City of Richmond spokesperson Ted Townsend said no one from the city could comment on the specific cases or more generally on how the city was dealing with outstanding permit applications. A reason was not provided.
