AmaZulu goalkeeper Richard Ofori's errors proved costly as Kaizer Chiefs secured a 2-2 draw in a thrilling Betway Premiership match. Despite AmaZulu netting all four goals, Ofori's own goal and a fumble allowed Chiefs to salvage a point.
A Richard Ofori blunder proved pivotal as Kaizer Chiefs snatched a 2-2 draw with AmaZulu in a dramatic Betway Premiership encounter at FNB Stadium yesterday. Usuthu's Ghanaian custodian 'assisted' an own goal and inadvertently scored another himself, leading to a night where AmaZulu managed all four goals but walked away with only a point. The result wasn't the response Chiefs craved following their defeat to Orlando Pirates in Saturday's Soweto derby.
Sloppy defending and missed scoring opportunities hampered their pursuit of a full three points. Coach Arthur Zwane opted to start all three of his January acquisitions. Thabo Cele featured in central midfield, Glody Lilepo on the right wing, and Tashreeq Morris leading the attack. Morris, making his Chiefs debut, quickly made an impact, pressuring Ramahlwe Mphahlele into a turnover within the first minute. Ofori made crucial saves in quick succession from Bradley Cross and Yusuf Maart. Reeve Frosler, deputizing for the suspended Njabulo Blom, combined well with Lilepo and delivered a cross that Ofori should have caught. Instead, he allowed the ball to slip through his grasp, and while Morris attempted to touch it, it was ultimately Mphahlele who inadvertently steered the ball into his own net. Chiefs' lead, however, proved fleeting, lasting only five minutes. A careless giveaway in midfield allowed Rowen Human to capitalize, sending Tsepang Moremi through on goal with a precise pass. Moremi calmly lifted the ball over Bruce Bvuma. Amakhosi had the opportunity to reclaim the lead before halftime but, as has been their recurring issue throughout the season, they failed to capitalize on several chances. The best fell to Morris, who connected with Inacio Miguel's long pass, but his volley narrowly missed the target. Chiefs were made to pay for their profligacy on the hour mark as Elmo Kambindo's header from Human's corner beat Bvuma. To their credit, Amakhosi launched a strong comeback, with Pule Mmodi left lamenting a missed opportunity as he blasted a glorious chance over the bar. Frosler then rattled the crossbar before Lilepo's header across goal was inexplicably spilled into his own net by Ofori. Gaston Sirino entered the fray for Chiefs and in the 70th minute, he sent Lilepo sprinting down the flank. Ofori made a half-save on his shot, and the ball was eventually cleared by Mphahlele
