There has been increased attention on HBCUs in the last three years or so. So, the Black Student Athlete Summit is looking to plan next year's event in North Carolina, the home of 12 historically black colleges and universities. ✍️ mr_jasonjones More:

about the summit in general, having big-name speakers in attendance and the plans for the future. We aren’t really celebrity-driven. We added him to the agenda late, so I don’t think anybody decided to come because he was going to be there. He has a book coming out, an autobiography called “Lucky Me,” and I know the person who wrote it with him, Jesse Washington from ESPN. Jesse said, “Man, I told Rich about the summit, and Rich is interested.” He told Rich, “These are dynamic young people.

Rich was an outsider when he began his career as an agent. Was he able to connect with athletes trying to get into the business world? You have those who might encounter people saying, “You’re a football player. You’re a basketball player. You’re not really part of what we do. You’re an outsider.” He said that he dropped out of college … the one thing he pointed out was just the idea of people disrespecting him. I said, “Man, how do you handle it?” And he said, “I don’t retaliate. I try to treat people with decency and respect and courtesy, but in the business world, people are real grimy. I just stay true to my values, and I always take the high road.” The students heard that loud and clear. He’s talked about how he’s had to evolve — you know, father, husband and all that kind of stuff.

Looking at how the summit has grown, could you have imagined all of this — back when you were at Ohio State, thinking about ways to help athletes?
