Baanksy, a sheep who gained fame for his unique artistic talent, has gone missing from Farm Sanctuary SA in Franschhoek, South Africa. A renowned animal sanctuary in Franschhoek , South Africa , is offering a substantial reward for the safe return of their star sheep artist, Baanksy . Baanksy 's disappearance was first noticed when he didn't show up at his designated art studio on Sunday, February 2nd, to work on a commissioned piece for a family visiting from the United Kingdom.

Despite a thorough investigation and search conducted by the police, no clues have emerged about his whereabouts, and there's no indication of a forced entry. Baanksy, a 2.5-year-old sheep rescued in 2022 from the side of a road in the Karoo, an intensive sheep farming region, gained fame for his unique artistic talent. He was often observed watching Pigcasso, the sanctuary's celebrated painting pig, at work. One day in 2024, during Baanksy's shearing, a brush was needed to clear the hair from the shearer's blade. A brush belonging to Pigcasso was used and left in the stall, and Baanksy, drawn to it, picked it up and started making artistic movements reminiscent of Pigcasso's own. This serendipitous discovery marked the beginning of Baanksy's artistic journey. Although his painting career only began in 2024, he quickly gained a global following, selling artworks worldwide and raising significant awareness and funds for the sanctuary and its mission. Farm Sanctuary SA, known for its offerings of wine tastings, barn-style accommodation, a plant-based café, and its commitment to animal rescue, is offering a substantial reward for Baanksy's safe return. The sanctuary has stipulated two conditions for receiving the reward: 50% must be donated to a charity of the recipient's choice, and Baanksy can be identified by the paint on his hooves and his painting ability. 'Baanksy's life has intrinsic value beyond the brush,' says Joanne Lefson, founder and director of Farm Sanctuary SA. The sanctuary is hopeful that Baanksy will be found safe and sound, and that his artistic talents can continue to inspire and benefit others

The incident, captured on video and widely shared online, has sparked national outrage. The NSPCA is also seeking information about the origin of the footage, urging those who filmed the attack to come forward. The organisation alleges that school management is obstructing the investigation by refusing to identify the learners involved. Local superstition surrounding baboons and witchcraft reportedly fuelled the attack, with claims that children had fainted earlier in the day, leading to the belief that the baboon was casting a spell. The community is alleged to have been involved in the chase and is actively protecting those responsible, hindering the NSPCA's efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
