A multi-phase Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) project to rehabilitate the freeway will be starting on Monday, Oct. 9.

FILE - Cars drive on the freeway in Seattle. A multi-phase Washington State Department of Transportation project to rehabilitate the freeway's surface will be starting on Monday, Oct. 9.

WSDOT said this project, Revive I-5, is the first major work on much of this section of I-5 in about 60 years. The $29.3 million project is meant to preserve the state’s busiest freeway and improve the driving surface on northbound and southbound Interstate 5 between Lucile Street and the Duwamish River, according to WSDOT.“The viability of Interstate 5 is crucial for the safety of local drivers and the health of our economy,” said WSDOT Project Engineer James Harper.

WSDOT said most of the work will be happening overnight to limit disruption for commerce and commuters. Drivers that use I-5 should expect weeknight lane and ramp closures between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. until spring 2024. The project will be replacing damaged concrete, grinding other areas to eliminate ruts and restriping throughout a 5-mile section of the freeway, WSDOT said. Expansion joints will also be replaced on northbound and southbound I-5 over Military Road.

There will be about 13 weekend long lane reductions needed to complete the project. WSDOT said the reductions could start as soon as November. When the reductions do start, they will begin 7 p.m. Fridays and continue through 5 a.m. Mondays. WSDOT will not allow lane closures on major holiday weekends and may limit closures on weekends when there are major events expected to draw large crowds to the stadium district or downtown Seattle.
