The latest film from Swedish director Ruben ?-stlund about wealthy cruise passengers stranded on an island hits you over the head like a falling coconut.
The other passengers, from an obnoxious Russian oligarch, Dimitry , to a sweet, elderly couple who made their fortune in hand grenades and land mines, are awash in privilege and power while being served by a middle-class of dutiful crewmen and women, acting as handmaidens to the wealthy. Unseen and unheard is the army of Filipino laborers down below, working to keep the ship going and the toilets flowing. This is the real triangle of sadness.
Overseeing all of this is The Captain , an alcoholic mess of a Marxist dealing with his own demon of dialectics as a man whose job it is to cater to the needs of the rich. As the ship starts to get tossed around and perhaps go under, he and Dimitry debate the merits of socialism versus capitalism. The only thing that would make"Triangle of Sadness" even more obvious is if the ship had been named the Titanic and Dimitry and The Captain had been rearranging the deck chairs.
This leads to the film's well-staged, centerpiece scene of passengers projectile vomiting, toilets exploding and rivers of feces running like the Mississippi. But the movie becomes more intriguing once on the island as the only person who has any true life skills among the survivors is Abigail , one of the previously invisible Filipino workers.
There's a more compelling movie inside this dynamic as opposed to the long set-up between Carl and Yaya that dominates the first part of the film and contributes to the overly long 150-minute running time. This makes"Triangle of Sadness" the least effective of Östlund's best-known exercises in discomfort but, to its credit, it's still unique.
