Restoring seemingly small concessions feels like a big deal for ballet companies, which simply cannot survive without the box-office draw of their “Nutcrackers.
The rest of the ballet is pretty much the same as other run-of-the-mill “Nutcrackers,” that is, if you ignore a visit from Buffalo Bill in place of the conventional Russian Trepak. The second act Land of the Sweets is here reimagined as the Exposition’s Midway, highlighting different cultures from around the world.Another revision: Herr Drosselmeyer’s role is split between two men.
“The Nutcracker” is part magic, part showpiece — a vehicle for celebrating Joffrey’s excellent dancers. And for the first time since this ballet debuted in 2016, I got a real sense of their comfort with it. The dancers are finally having fun, particularly in the party and battle scenes, which are filled to the brim with delightful nuance and heartwarming whimsy.
